UW Pumpkin Carving

Saturday October 26th

Fall has arrived and in the last few days has brought it’s cooler temps our way.  Please don’t let that be your signal to put away your gear until next spring.  Here are some things you need to think about:

Mermet Springs does not treat it’s quarry water with chemicals to get water clarity and in turn kill all the fish life, so Mother Nature is at her best in the fall, cooler water temps typically mean clearer water.

We are heading into the off season for diving in the Midwest, so that means fewer people at the quarry.  Sometimes it’s like having a private quarry, you don’t see anyone underwater and the bottom isn’t stirred up by a million divers laying in the silt. Thank Goodness!

Just because the air temps are down doesn’t mean the warm water temps we enjoyed in August and September are gone immediately, it takes a little time for the air to cool the water.  Right now we are sitting in the mid 70’s even though the air temps are in the 40’s at night.

Lastly, if you put your gear away you can’t come out and join us for our annual pumpkin carving and chili cookoff.  The Saturday before Halloween we always go spend the day at Mermet and carve pumpkins underwater (harder than you think) and then we feast on the goodies that everyone has brought from those who want you to sample their chili to those who have a sweet tooth and bring spooky cookies or cupcakes.  It’s a great day!

Not a pumpkin carver? It’s okay, just come and dive and listen to the Halloween music underwater and enjoy a day of diving and eating.  If you come, you must eat!  There is always plenty of food and we usually go around and ask the other groups to come join us for a cup of chili and some snacks!!

Happy Halloween! Come join us!!!!

Road Closure:

As some of you know, the bridge between us and Friendly Village was damaged when a truck hit it.  Technically the road is closed but they are still allowing local traffic to come and go on either side of the bridge.  You can still get to both Blue Meridian and Gifted Hand if you use the access at Keller Road and 81.  You can go around the detour sign and everything is fine.  The actual bridge is over a mile south of our location.  You cannot reach us going north on 81.  You would need to take the detour around to Todd Bridge Road to Keller.  Thank you for your patience, hopefully they will make some decisions on the repair sooner rather than later.
